St. John Center serves people experiencing homelessness through Street Outreach, the Day Shelter and Social Services Center, and our Permanent Supportive Housing Program. The Day Shelter and Social Services Center serves people who identify as male and strives to be a welcoming environment for all people including those who are transitioning. UP For Women and Children provides day shelter and services for those who identify as female.
I just lost my housing. What do I do?
You can come to our Day Shelter at 700 E. Muhammad Ali Blvd, and complete a short intake process (20-40 mins). The Day Shelter is open from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm weekdays and weekends (8:00 am – 12:30 pm Wednesdays, 8:00 am – 2:00 pm holidays).
Once you complete an intake, you can get housing support from a Housing Specialist on Mondays from 9:00 – 12:00 pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. We recommend arriving early so that you can sign up as soon as possible to see a Housing Specialist.
We also have a housing group every Wednesday at 9:00 am, where you can ask questions and find out more about how St. John Center can assist you with your next steps.
You can also use other services offered at the Day Shelter after completing an intake.
I lost my wallet and need an ID for a job or apartment.
Once you complete an intake (20-40 mins), you can get help acquiring a state I.D., birth certificate or social security card at St. John Center by signing up in the Day Shelter to between 9:00 am and 11:00 am, Monday – Thursday. We recommend arriving as early as possible so that you can see a staff member.
I need a place to send and receive my mail.
Once you complete an intake at the Day Shelter, you can send or receive mail at St. John Center.
I am a veteran. Is there help for me at St. John Center?
Yes. Once you complete an intake at the Day Shelter, you can sign up to speak with a VA representative at St. John Center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 8:30 am and 11:00 am.
Can I get legal help at St. John Center?
Yes. Once you complete an intake at the Day Shelter, you can get support with certain civil legal needs at St. John Center through Legal Aid Society’s Project Help, which is available for sign-up between 9:00 am and 11:00 am on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
I am trying to find a shelter for the night.
You can call the Louisville Coalition for the Homeless Bed Line at (502) 637-2337 daily, between 10:00 am – 1:00 pm to reserve a bed at available overnight shelters. We recommend calling the Bed Line as early as possible to secure a bed for the night.
I need help finding meals and food.
You can find meal times at various shelters and organizations by checking the Louisville Coalition for the Homeless’s Street Tips booklet here.
St. John Center does not serve meals or provide food.
I need to take a shower and get cleaned up.
Once you complete an intake at the Day Shelter, you can sign up to take a shower and receive a clean towel, washcloth, and hygiene items between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm (until 11:00 am on Wednesdays).
Can I get legal help getting my social security?
Yes. Once you complete an intake at the Day Shelter, you can sign up to speak with someone with the Legal Aid Society at St. John Center on Wednesdays between 9 am – 11 am.
How do I get referred to St. John Center’s Permanent Supportive Housing Program?
You can contact Family Health Center’s Common Assessment Team at (502) 637-2080 to complete an assessment over the phone.
My friend/family member is experiencing homelessness.

I need help finding clothing and supplies
For socks, hygiene items, and other needs, you can visit the Day Shelter between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on weekdays and weekends (8:00 am – 12:30 pm Wednesdays, 8:00 am – 2:00 pm holidays) and get assistance with these items after completing an intake.
For clothing, such as shirts, pants, and shoes, you can visit the Schuhmann Center, which is a clothes closet located close to St. John Center. Their hours are 9:00 am – 11:45 am, Monday – Thursday. The Schuhmann Center is located at 730 E Gray St, Louisville, KY 40202.
Can you help me get into a recovery program?
Yes. Once you complete an intake at the Day Shelter, please let a St. John Center staff member know you are interested in entering a recovery program and they can help you get connected.
Can I speak to a Social Security Representative at St. John Center?
Once you complete an intake at the Day Shelter, you can sign up to speak with a Social Security Representative virtually on a computer at St. John Center between 9:00 am and 11:00 am on Wednesdays.
