Safety and Services Specialist
Title: Safety and Services Specialist
Reports to: Interim Day Shelter Manager
Type: Part-Time / Non-exempt
Description
Responsible for various tasks related to the internal and external security of the shelter
facility, and the compassionate and efficient provision of services to clients.

Responsibilities
The shelter Safety and Services Specialist will:
- Open the doors of the shelter facility and perform opening operations with other staff; monitor for the safe arrival of staff and volunteers.
- Monitor the flow of the clients as they enter and exit, and on the floor; monitor for safety among clients in line outside the facility.
- Build client relationships; enforce shelter expectations; discuss housing plans with clients.
- De-escalate tensions among clients, and manage incidents between and among clients that require intervention.
- Provide social services, such as assisting clients with obtaining identification documents and transportation passes.
- Enter information and service transactions into client files and multiple databases as required by situations.
- Coordinate and facilitate the provision of services by partner agencies in the shelter; welcome and support volunteers as they serve clients; fill in for unclaimed volunteer spots to serve clients by serving coffee, providing hygiene products, answering the phone, or checking clients in.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe space and orderly atmosphere inside the shelter, in front of the shelter, and around the exterior premises; assist in the organization of material goods and other donations.
- Assist members of the frontline staff with transitions to/from providing shelter support; collaborate with all St. John Center staff members about client needs in other programs with crossover.
- Welcome and represent the agency to guests who visit the shelter to bring donations or receive a tour of the facility.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Utilizing basic clinical skills to build rapport with clients and offering insights to the team regarding best practices.
- Functioning as a member of the shelter team, contributing to daily needs, providing basic services to all-day shelter guests, facilitating group life skills instruction, and conducting intake assessments with new clients.
- Employing components of de-escalation daily.
- Completing necessary record-keeping in the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and completing other documentation as required by agency and specific situations.
- Addressing issues, problems, or questions of policy or procedure that may arise, defusing tensions, and communicating a shift or incident summary to the immediate supervisor and other staff members as needed.
- This job will require consistent shifts on both Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30 am -4 pm, as well as a negotiable schedule for additional weekday shifts, up to no more than 18 hours per week.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to engage in standing or sitting for long periods, bending, light lifting, carrying, walking, or climbing stairs.
- Ability and willingness to safely and effectively de-escalate situations, including conducting physical interventions when necessary to maintain safety as directed by the agency.

Responsible for assisting homeless individuals in obtaining and maintaining permanent
housing and providing the ongoing support needed to maintain a stable living environment utilizing the principles of Housing First, Trauma-Informed and Person-
Centered Care, Motivational Interviewing, Strengths-Based Case Management, and
Harm Reduction. Contribute to additional single-site permanent supportive housing
start-up tasks as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
- Be an approved Targeted Case Manager with the state of Kentucky

Responsibilities
Work responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Interpret the supportive housing program with reference to the mission and goals of the St. John Center strategic plan to ensure that grant and funding requirements are met
- Ensure that St. John Center delivers high quality programs that are responsive to the specific needs of the people served
- Provide subject matter expertise and guidance related to supportive housing programs, housing first, recovery dynamics, and behavioral health issues as they relate to people experiencing homelessness
- Collaborate with Clinical Manager to provide high-quality, regular individual and group supervision to permanent supported housing staff comprised of housing case managers, peer supports, and other staff as necessary
- Collaborate with Clinical Manager to ensure that case files are complete and services are properly documented.
- Collaborate with Property Manager as needed to support residents in maintaining stable housing.
- Collaborate with Volunteer Coordinator to ensure appropriate volunteer coverage as needed.
- Offer supervision, support and guidance that enables staff to deliver effective services; foster a culture of ongoing education, evidence-based practices, and continuous improvement;
- Approve timecards, mileage reimbursement requests, and expense documentation for direct reports
- Work with the Director of Housing to meet grant reporting requirements, including providing match documentation, service metrics and program narratives for reports.
- Review, analyze program data, e.g. HMIS reports, budget documents and other reports
- Engage housing tenants for purposes of program oversight, e.g. conducting focus groups, hearing grievances, and providing crisis intervention
- Provide intensive on-the-job training for new housing staff; provide back-up coverage and support for case managers
- Collaborate with community partners, including the Coalition for the Homeless, Common Assessment Team, Dare to Care, Phoenix Health, payee services and other appropriate service providers to maintain a monthly schedule of innovative on-site services to housing clients that meet HUD requirements.

Responsible for coordinating and writing all grant submissions to foundation, corporate,
and government funders, representing over $2 million in annual funding; writing and
reviewing other content for the organization as needed; submitting timely and accurate
reports for all existing grant funded projects; building meaningful relationships with
funding entities; and working as part of the Mission Advancement team.

Responsibilities
The Grants Coordinator will:

Outreach Housing Specialist
Title: Outreach Housing Specialist
Reports to: Outreach Manager

Description
The Outreach Housing Specialist plays a crucial role in St. John Center’s mission to end
homelessness. By connecting individuals and families to stable housing, this position ensures that those experiencing homelessness can overcome barriers and transition into permanent housing with dignity and support. In collaboration with other members of the Outreach Team, the Outreach Housing Specialist will focus on assisting clients’ transition into housing by helping them identify income aligned housing, obtain housing vouchers, and navigate the housing process. In this role the Outreach Housing Specialist will also work to build and sustain relationship with landlords and property owners. The Outreach Team works within a harm reduction and person-centered model. All duties are performed with a multidisciplinary and multi-agency team approach. This role is pivotal in addressing homelessness by connecting clients to stable housing opportunities.

Responsibilities
The Housing Specialist will:
- Conduct outreach to engage individuals experiencing homelessness and assess their barriers to housing; offer a spectrum of assistance to clients to address their barriers to housing
- Serve as the housing expert of the Outreach Team and remain abreast of new housing opportunities for clients;
- Host housing groups Outreach clients and individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness at least bi-weekly.
- Make referrals and complete necessary follow-up to both internal programs and external community partners;
- Advocate for clients throughout the rental application process and provide direct assistance with filling out forms, working with supportive organizations, obtaining necessary documentation, aiding in the apartment search, and completing the move-in process;
- Accompany clients as they view apartments and meet with landlords and community partners;
- Provide crisis intervention as necessary and provide harm reduction services;
- Serve as a member of the Outreach Team to assist clients with a myriad of self-sufficiency services, including intake assessments, referrals, and housing counseling.
Additional Responsibilities Include:
- Utilizing basic skills to build rapport with clients and offering insights to the team regarding best practices, especially as it relates to promoting a low barrier, housing first approach.
- Functioning as a member of the Outreach team, contributing to daily needs, providing basic services to all day Outreach clients, facilitating group life skills instruction and conducting intake assessments with new clients.
- Employing components of de-escalation on a daily basis.
- Completing necessary record-keeping in the Salesforce and Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) databases and complete other documentation as required by agency and specific situations.
- Addressing issues, problems, or questions of policy or procedure that may arise, defusing tensions, communicating a shift or incident summary to immediate supervisor and to other staff members as needed.
- Complete and submit time sheets and mileage logs in a timely manner, and in accordance with internal practices.

Non-local travel is not required.
