Safety and Services Specialist
Title: Safety and Services Specialist
Reports to: Day Shelter Manager
Type: PRN / Non-exempt
Responsible for various tasks related to the internal and external security of the shelter
facility, and the compassionate and efficient provision of services to clients.

Responsibilities
The shelter safety and services specialist will:
- Open the doors of the shelter facility and perform opening operations with other staff; monitor for the safe arrival of staff and volunteers.
- Monitor the flow of the clients as they enter and exit, and on the floor; monitor for safety among clients in line outside the facility.
- Build client relationships; enforce shelter expectations; discuss housing plans with clients.
- De-escalate tensions among clients, and manage incidents between and among clients that require intervention.
- Provide social services, such as assisting clients with obtaining identification documents and transportation passes.
- Enter information and service transactions into client files and multiple databases as required by situations.
- Coordinate and facilitate the provision of services by partner agencies in the shelter; welcome and support volunteers as they serve clients; fill in for unclaimed volunteer spots to serve clients by serving coffee, providing hygiene products, answering the phone, or checking clients in.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe space and orderly atmosphere inside the shelter, in front of the shelter, and around the exterior premises; assist in the organization of material goods and other donations.
- Assist members of the frontline staff with transitions to/from providing shelter support; collaborate with all St. John Center staff members about client needs in other programs with crossover.
- Welcome and represent the agency to guests who visit the shelter to bring donations or receive a tour of the facility.
Additional Responsibilities Include
- Utilizing basic clinical skills to build rapport with clients and offering insights to the team regarding best practices.
- Functioning as a member of the shelter team, contributing to daily needs, providing basic services to all-day shelter guests, facilitating group life skills instruction, and conducting intake assessments with new clients.
- Employing components of de-escalation daily.
- Completing necessary record-keeping in the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and completing other documentation as required by agency and specific situations.
- Addressing issues, problems, or questions of policy or procedure that may arise, defusing tensions, and communicating a shift or incident summary to the immediate supervisor and other staff members as needed.
- This job will require consistent shifts on both Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30 am -4 pm, as well as a negotiable schedule for additional weekday shifts, up to no more than 18 hours per week.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to engage in standing or sitting for long periods, bending, light lifting, carrying, walking, or climbing stairs.
- Ability and willingness to safely and effectively de-escalate situations, including conducting physical interventions when necessary to maintain safety as directed by the agency.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma
- Basic computer literacy including word processing and Google suite
- Effective communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree
- 2 years of experience in working with the homeless population
- Experience with HMIS

Residential Targeted Case Manager
Title: Residential Targeted Case Manager
Reports to: Sheehan Manager/ Clinical Manager
Type: Full-Time / Non-Exempt / 36.25 Hrs. Per Week
Responsible for assisting homeless individuals in obtaining and maintaining permanent housing and providing the ongoing support needed to maintain a stable living environment utilizing the principles of Housing First, Trauma-Informed and Person- Centered Care, Motivational Interviewing, Strengths-Based Case Management, and Harm Reduction. Contribute to additional single-site permanent supportive housing start-up tasks as needed.

Responsibilities
Work responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Identify client needs related to housing via engagements, interviews, observations, and assessments
- Conduct ongoing outreach to individuals experiencing homelessness
- Develop individual client service plans and document client/worker activity
- Conduct at least monthly home visits to clients in permanent housing
- Conduct life skills group meetings and coordinate annual events and celebrations forclients in permanent housing
- Make referrals and assist clients in connecting to community resources
- Accompany clients and/or provide transportation to services
- Maintain landlord relationships, and act as liaison between property Management and clients in obtaining and maintaining housing
- Monitor the delivery and outcome of services provided to clients by medical facilities, social service agencies, and community resources
- Provide crisis intervention as necessary
- Complete documentation required by appropriate funding sources
- Participate in staff and community meetings
- Act as a member of the St. John Center frontline team and participate in daily functions and organizational responsibilities of St. John Center
Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel throughout Metro Louisville
- Standing or sitting for long periods, bending, light lifting, walking, climbing stairs
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a behavioral science
- Willingness to become a Targeted Case Manager
- Basic computer literacy including word processing and Google suite
- Effective communication skills
- Must have a personal automobile, valid driver’s license, liability insurance, and willingness to transport co-workers and/or clients
Preferred Qualifications
- Be an approved Targeted Case Manager with the state of Kentucky
- 5 years of experience in working with the homeless population
- Ability and willingness to safely and effectively de-escalate situations, including conducting physical interventions when necessary to maintain safety as directed by the agency

Grants Coordinator
Title: Grants Coordinator
Reports to: Director of Mission Advancement
Salary: $45k – $50k
Type: Full-time / Non-exempt / Hours per week: 36.25
The Grants Coordinator is a key member of the Mission Advancement team at St. John Center, responsible for securing more than $2 million in annual funding through compelling grant proposals and stewardship. This role combines strategic research, persuasive writing, relationship-building, and timely reporting. As an internal team member, the Grant Writer plays a critical role in sustaining and expanding institutional support while aligning with the organization’s mission to end homelessness.
Responsibilities
The Grants Coordinator will:
- Research, write, and submit foundation, corporate, and government grant proposals in advance of deadlines, focusing on new grant opportunities.
- Maintain a detailed grant calendar, tracking application and reporting deadlines.
- Write compelling case statements and other fundraising content rooted in evidence-based practices and the organization’s impact.
- Prepare and submit timely and accurate grant reports that reflect progress on funded initiatives.
- Stay informed about trends in homelessness services, housing policy, and nonprofit philanthropy to improve grant competitiveness.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with funders by sharing program updates, outcomes, and success stories.
- Coordinate award nominations for relevant local and national recognitions.
- Support Mission Advancement projects, including the internship program and donor communications.
- Participate in staff meetings, cross-departmental collaboration, and ongoing learning about program operations and community impact.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.
- Ability to climb stairs, lift up to 15 pounds, and move about the building as needed.
- Adaptability in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Exceptional written communication and storytelling skills.
- Minimum of 2 years of grant writing or related fundraising experience.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and interpret funder guidelines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and ability to quickly learn new systems.
- Strong attention to detail, time management, and follow-through.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Bloomerang CRM or other donor management systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Nonprofit Management, Public Policy, or related field.
- Experience interpreting budgets and impact data for reporting.
- Comfort engaging in donor stewardship and relationship management.
